Warp-Weighted Loom (2022)

The warp-weighted loom is a medieval tool used by Northern European women, amongst others, to hand-weave cloth. Warp-Weighted Loom (2022) is a contemporary, queer, feminist reading of this loom---a living, functional sculpture that acts simultaneously as an autobiographical object.

Each part of the loom is carefully considered for role and function, translating into aesthetic decisions: the heddle bar features heat-sensitive pigment, as it is the most touched part of the loom; the front uprights contain two-word phrases of comfort, while the back uprights list nouns which have impacted my relationship to queerness and/or gender; the shed bar presents a blue/pink gradient, referencing implicated binaries (the natural/artificial shed, the warp/weft, the gender binary, and fine art/craft); and eight loom weights become portraits of grounding women in my life.

"Warp-Weighted Loom," 2022. Wood, acrylic paint, air-dry clay, model magic, thread, heat-sensitive pigment, stickers, paper, screws, nails, glitter, and in-progress tapestry (yarn, tapestry needle, warp thread, embroidery thread, found fabric, friendship bracelets, and swimsuit padding inserts). 69 in. x 48 in. x 34.5 in.

A Loom of One's Own (2022) is a curated space for queer community-building and collaboration. The space is physically centered around the Warp-Weighted Loom (2022).

The installation makes space for collective-making in conjunction with discussions of identity, craft, and care.

The installation includes dozens of objects and images displayed across the room, including: paint palettes, sketches, stickers, tape, small woven tapestries, and a yarn hammock.

Through the combination of feminized aesthetics, symbolic imagery, and tactile materials, A Loom of One's Own (2022) creates space for reflection and representation on both personal and collective scales, acting as a queer site of comfort, play, discovery, and authentic expression.
